Do You Want To Be A Charleston Firefighter?

The City of Charleston Fire Department is one of the oldest professional (paid) fire departments in the United States and is steeped in history and tradition, it is also now the largest and busiest fire department in the State of South Carolina.  The most visible aspect of this are the famous historic fire houses, including the oldest continually operated fire house in the U.S., Central Station, built in 1887, it is located on the corner of Meeting St. & Wentworth St. in Downtown Charleston.  The CFD was organized in 1882 and it's Firefighters have been dedicated to serving the citizens of Charleston, South Carolina proudly and courageously ever since.

With more than 300 Firefighters, working shifts of on 24 hours and off 48 hours, the Charleston Fire Department responded to more than 25,000 calls last year and the call volume has been increasing rapidly over the past few years as more people move to, work in and travel to the Charleston area.  The Charleston Fire Department is responsible for covering an area of over 110 square miles, not including Charleston Harbor and the surrounding rivers and waterways.  The Charleston Fire Department is made up of 19 companies, operating out of 14 stations, in 4 battalions.  The CFD has 16 engines, 3 ladder trucks, 2 HAZMAT units, 1 Air & Light unit and several ancillary vehicles and reserve equipment (battalion chief cars, assistant chief cars, reserve engines, reserve ladder truck, etc.).  The CFD also operates it's own Training Facility, Logistics Center and Mechanic Shop.

The Charleston Fire Department responds to all fire calls, car accidents, rescue calls, HAZMAT calls and other emergency calls within the city limits, the CFD also provides mutual aid to neighboring departments.  EMS for the majority of the city is handled by Charleston County EMS, with Berkely County EMS covering Daniel Island.  The Charleston Fire Department is currently a First Responder agency and the CFD responds an engine company to all EMS calls within the city limits.  The Charleston Fire Department is currently working to become certified as an BLS provider agency with the ultimate goal, down-the-line of become and ALS provider agency.

Upon becoming an Charleston Fire Recruit, you will enter into the CFD's Recruit Class, which is held at the Charleston Fire Department Training Facility.  The recruit class is currently 26 weeks long and includes: EMT-Basic, 1152, Firefighter I & II, HAZMAT Awareness & Ops, Flammable Liquids & Gases Firefighting, Basic Auto Extrication, Rapid Intervention Crew, Rescuing The Rescuer, Building Construction I & II & Emergency Vehicle Driver Training.  Those who pass the 26-week 'Rookie School' will be assigned to one of the CFD's 19 companies and enter into their probationary period.  During this period, the 'Probie' will undergo training and testing constantly by that Company's Captain & Crew, as well as by the CFD Training Division, to ensure that the 'Probie' has retained and improved upon the skills and knowledge needed to perform as a Charleston Firefighter.  The 'Probie' must pass all tests and finish out the year-long probationary period with a clean record in order to 'make' probation and become a full-fledged member of the Charleston Fire Department.

-----------------------------------------

THE CFD JUST HIRED A RECRUIT CLASS OF 22 PERSONNEL ON 10DEC12. WE WISH THEM LUCK AS THEY ENDURE THE NEXT 6 MONTHS OF TRAINING.

SINCE 2008, THE CHARLESTON FIRE DEPARTMENT TYPICALLY RUNS 1-2 RECRUIT CLASSES PER YEAR WITH 20-30 PERSONNEL PER CLASS. THIS IS MOSTLY DUE TO OUR LACK OF ABILITY TO RETAIN PERSONNEL WHILE TRYING TO MAINTAIN PROPER STAFFING LEVELS.

THE NEXT FIREFIGHTER APPLICANT TEST WILL MOST LIKELY TAKE PLACE MID-LATE 2013.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN APPLYING, PLEASE CONTACT OUR HUMAN RESOURCES LIAISON TERAN MISE AT 843-724-7388.  SHE WILL TAKE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION AND WILL ADVISE YOU OF WHEN THE APPLICATION PROCESS OPENS.  YOU CAN ALSO CHECK WITH US HERE ON LOCAL61.COM, FOLLOW US ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE OR VISIT THE CITY OF CHARLESTON'S WEBSITE FOR THE LATEST UPDATES.  WE WILL POST MORE INFORMATION ON THE JOB POSTING AND TESTING PROCESS AS WE GET CLOSER AND MORE INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE.  BE SURE TO CHECK BACK WITH US OFTEN.  GOOD LUCK!

-----------------------------------------

NO APPLICATIONS OR RESUMES WILL BE ACCEPTED UNLESS THERE IS A POSTED OPENING FOR THE POSITION OF FIREFIGHTER.

-----------------------------------------

Over the past few years, the CFD has been hiring an average of two recruit clases a year, with each class containing around 25-30 recruits.  This has been necessary in order to meet minimum staffing requirements of four men per truck, as well as to fill vacancies created through attrition.

If you are interested in applying with the Charleston Fire Department, click on the link, to the City of Charleston Human Resources Department, HERE: http://www.charleston-sc.gov/dept/content.aspx?nid=1238. The City of Charleston HR Department, oversees all of the job openings and hiring processes.  At the bottom of that page there will be several links listed under the section titled 'Related Documents'.  In that section, click on the link that says 'Employment Opportunities'.  From there it will open up a .pdf file, of employment opportunities with the City, scroll down a little ways and you'll notice the index and if there are any openings with the CFD, they will be listed under the 'Fire Department Positions' section, scroll down to the appropriate page number to read the posting.  HR updates the employment opportunities weekly and it's usually done on Friday's, so it's a good idea to check back periodically.  Neither the City nor the Fire Department accept applications or resumes for Firefighter, unless there is a posted job opening for that position.  The application and hiring process for the CFD are subject to changes and updates so please be sure when applying to read ALL of the information and directions carefully.

In the meantime, as you would with any job, we suggest that you do your research and check out the area, cost of living, salary/wages, retirement, CFD itself and it's history (both recent and past) and so on. This will help prepare you for a potential career with the CFD and will help you in your decision maing process along the way.

For more information on the CFD and Local 61, you can follow us here on our website and you check us out on Facebook.  We will post any job openings, for Firefighter, here on the website and on our Facebook Page.
